Haverhill, MA (May 7, 2019) – The seven time defending Region 21 champion Northern Essex Community College baseball team will open the quest for an eighth straight title on Thursday when they open up tournament play as the #2 seed under the lights at Trinity Stadium against Quinsigamond Community College.
Winners of nine straight games after sweeping a pair of weekend double headers against Quinsigamond and UConn-Avery Point, the Knights will enter the post-season with a record of 23-14 and 11-4 in Region 21 play. Community College of Rhode Island is the top seed entering the post-season with just one conference loss and Massasoit rounds out the field of four in the double elimination tournament.
As a team Northern Essex currently leads the nation in batting average at .391. At the top of the offense is freshman Spencer Brown (Beverly, MA) who leads the country in home runs (17) and slugging percentage (1.076) and is second in batting average (.508). Leo Romero (Lawrence, MA) is also among the offensive leaders as he leads the region in RBI's (53) and is fifth in batting average (.450).
On the mound, the Knights have begun to round into form down the stretch with Mike Goodin (Dracut, MA), Ronald Luke (Malden, MA) and Brandon Mullarkey (Reading, MA) carrying the bulk of the work down the stretch. During the nine game winning streak the pitching staff has held the opposition five runs or less on six occasions, while the offense has averaged 12.6 runs per game during the same nine game winning streak.
